How many unemployed people are there in Finland in 2026?

At the end of August 2026 there were 329,600 unemployed jobseekers, 6% more than a year earlier (KEHA Centre). According to the Labour Force Survey, there were 262,000 unemployed – the figures differ because they are measured differently.

When are the new unemployment figures published?

The September 2026 unemployment figures will be published on 20.10.2026, the October figures on 24.11.2026 and the November figures on 22.12.2026. The publishers are the KEHA Centre (employment review) and Statistics Finland (labour force survey).

Do I have to register as a job seeker as soon as the work ends?

Yes, register as a jobseeker on Työmarkkinatori as soon as the work ends. Registration is a prerequisite for unemployment benefit.

How do I advertise a vacancy free of charge?

An employer can advertise a vacancy free of charge on Job Market Finland, where the advertisement is visible to all jobseekers. It is worth supplementing the Job Market Finland advertisement with the field's own channels and the company's website.

What is general support and how much is it?

General support is a Kela unemployment benefit that replaced the basic daily allowance and the labour market subsidy on 1 May 2026. It is €37.21 per day, the same as the earlier benefits, but it is means-tested: other income and assets may reduce it. Recipients of the earlier benefits moved to general support automatically.

What is youth unemployment now?

On the basis of a lack of vocational skills, the subsidy is 50 % of the pay costs for up to 5 or 10 months, and on the basis of reduced work capacity up to 70 %. The subsidy is applied for from your own region's employment area before the employment starts.

It is not mandatory now, but according to the government's pay transparency proposal, from 1.1.2027 a jobseeker must be told the starting salary or a salary range in good time. The law is not yet in force, so follow its approval.

Tips

How to use the information

  1. Register as a jobseeker at Työmarkkinatori as soon as your work ends. This is a prerequisite for unemployment benefit.
  2. Apply for the same position through several services: not all positions are on Työmarkkinatori, and some are only on LinkedIn or Duunitori.
  3. In Uusimaa and Pirkanmaa there are now more vacancies than a year ago. There are also plenty of remote positions.
  4. Set up a search alert: over 30,000 new places are announced each month, and a quick applicant gets in among the first.
  5. Unemployment figures are published at the end of the month. The next release is on 20.10.2026.
  6. As an employer, when budgeting the cost of a hire, add to the salary the social security costs (about 20%), holiday bonus and onboarding time – the first year's cost is often clearly greater than the payroll amount.
  7. General support is means-tested: other income and assets may reduce it. Report changes in income to Kela immediately.
  8. In August 2026 Uusimaa had about 2,600 more vacancies than a year earlier, while Lapland and Northern Savo had fewer. If you can relocate or work remotely, widen your search area.
  9. A third of open positions are hard to fill. State the salary or salary range in the job advert: the Pay Transparency Act is proposed to enter into force on 1.1.2027, and it requires disclosing pay information to applicants.
  10. Find out about the pay subsidy before the employment begins: it is not granted retroactively, and the decision is made by the employment area of your region.
